This workshop addresses the current landscape of Internet-based search infrastructures, how they shape our information discovery, how Search is flawed and what we can do to repair Search infrastructures.
What are we to do when one company controls 90% of searching on the web? What are we to do when new search engines and search-like tools appear with promises to use artificial intelligence to generate answers to all of our questions? What are we to do with our search complaints and concerns? Dr. Daniel Griffin will facilitate a discussion and group exercises in actively refusing, repairing, and reimagining search tools.

Speaker Bio: Dr. Griffin’s focus on care and repair builds on his experience teaching about search; his research into search quality complaints, rescripting search, and scholarly search platforms; and his work at UC Berkeley with the Algorithmic Fairness & Opacity Working Group, the Center for Technology, Society, & Policy, and the Center for Long-Term Cybersecurity. He completed his PhD from the UC Berkeley School of Information with a dissertation on the search practices of data engineers in 2022
