In this lunchtime "in conversation" event, Dr. Courtney M. Cox, Associate Professor in the Department of Indigenous, Race, and Ethnic Studies (IRES) at the University of Oregon, presents on her project Take That for Data, with UCLA Professor Julia Powles, DataX Director of Tech Policy and Executive Director, UCLA Institute for Technology, Law & Policy; and Professor Jacqueline Alderson, DataX Director of Tech and Human Performance, and Special Advisor for the Los Angeles Olympics, LA28.

Abstract: Frequent headlines surrounding the surge in app-based gambling, teams’ investments in big data, and the use of robo-officiating bring new questions about the use of emerging technology in sports. In her current project, Take That for Data, Dr. Cox examines sport’s latest technocultural turn and documents this current landscape’s impact on the lives and labor of athletes and fans. In doing so, she considers how these new systems and structures reveal larger shifts in how we conceptualize fairness, access, and even justice through the lens of sport.
