Between September 15 and 25, 2025, the University of California Carpentries (Carpentries) community is hosting a Data Carpentry workshop for graduate students, researchers and staff who want to build foundational skills in working with data.

To help participants get ready, we are also offering an optional (but highly recommended) drop-in Install Fest on September 11–12 (Thursday–Friday) to walk through installing the workshop tools. Zoom details will be sent out after you register for the workshop.

The Carpentries teaches hands-on skills that help researchers work more efficiently and reproducibly. This workshop will introduce participants to tools and practices for managing and analyzing data.

The curriculum will cover how to:

  •  Structure messy spreadsheets into usable, consistent data
  • Automate tasks and navigate files from the command line
  • Keep track of your work and collaborate using version control
  • Query and manage data in databases
  • Analyze and visualize data using Python
  • Analyze and visualize data using R
  • Clean and transform data quickly with OpenRefine

This workshop is designed for learners with little to no prior computational experience. Instructors create a welcoming environment and emphasize not only how to conduct analyses, but also how to structure the workflow so that it is automated and reproducible.

Space is limited, and we expect the workshop to fill quickly.
